Spend an afternoon exploring Khaliji dance, the hypnotic and colorful social dance of Saudi and Arabian Gulf women. Women perform this dance to celebrate joyous occasions like weddings. The oriental dancers of Cairo and Beirut also weave it into their nightclub routines, and Khaliji dance moves show up in discos from Baghdad to Marrakech.
If you’ve never taken a class in Khaliji, this is for you. Learn how to move in an elegant, sparkly thobe nashal, and how to swing your hair like a bedouin princess. You’ll come away with new steps, a new choreography, new ideas for Khaliji performances, and plenty of resources for further exploration. Most importantly, having fun is an integral part of Kay's Khaliji workshops!
To enhance your experience, percussionist Lisa Esperson will teach you how to play khaliji rhythms on a framedrum (Tar). Kay will also teach a simple khaliji song in Arabic.
What to wear: a full-length loose skirt. If you have them, bring a thobe nashal (traditional khaliji dancing dress) and a framedrum. We'll have some thobes and framedrums you can borrow during class.
